Tips & Tricks Tuesdays: Inspiration is all around us.

Hi all!

Welcome to "Tips and Tricks Tuesdays: What would MacGyver do?"

Feel free to link up your tip, trick or tutorial at the bottom of this post; I've posted instructions below on how to party!

As well, you can now go HERE to sign up to host Tips & Tricks!!

For this week's tip, I thought I'd do something a little more abstract.

I had the opportunity to visit the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Illinois this weekend, and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was like a kid in a candy store, walking around for hours staring at displays, the quilt exhibits, playing with the long-arms (which, I'm surprised to say - I'm actually pretty good at...) and of course, I picked up a few cool nick-knacks and some moda stacks. Fun.

The whole time I was walking around, I was always thinking: what would I do differently? what spin could I put on this pattern?

And then it got me to thinking: inspiration for our next projects is all around us. We just have to 'look' at what we're 'seeing' in a less literal way.

I composed a collage below of things I've looked at in the past when designing a quilt - because we all know, a great quilt isn't just about great fabric - it's about great composition, too.

1. Branding: A plethora of Target brand "Up & Up" arrows forming a collage; 2. Architecture: Beautiful church with a gorgeous backdrop; 3. Seasons: holidays, etc. 4. Food: bowl of Fruit Loops; 5. Furniture: Beautiful antique silk headboard; 6. Cityscapes: Chicago in the winter; 7. Color: the color wheel; 8. Shapes: bottles of Method brand handsoap; 9. Fashion: the 2013 fashion industries projected color palettes; 10. Art: Andy Warhol's Flowers; 11. Fashion: Ralph Lauren's Spring 2013 runway; 12. Branding: CVS's gift card logos;
13. Nature: a field of sunflowers

So: where do you find inspiration for your quilts?

Here's the low-down on the linky-party:

  1. Post a tip, trick or tutorial on your website or blog
  2. Grab a "Tips & Tricks" button from my blog in the right sidebar -->
  3. Post said button in your tricks post, and link back to my blog
  4. At the bottom of this post, click the "link up" button and follow the directions...let the party begin!
  5. If you have a chance, pop by the other fellow blogger linker-uppers at the bottom of this post and share some love!

I'm in the process of creating a sign-up sheet for hosting Tips & Tricks Tuesdays. It'll be posted soon.

In the meantime, over the next couple of months with the holidays in full swing, I'll be posting T&T T's on the first and third Tuesdays of November and December.

Happy Quilting!!

  1. You know, that's so simple, and yet I've never thought of it. Then again, I haven't been quilting long enough to feel like I can step outside the box and create my own pattern. However, I have started playing around with getting a color palette from a picture.

    1. I know, hey? Easy peasy. You can do it. :) I think it's the most fun when you design it yourself!
