Back when I made a lot of clothing and dresses, I often would use the pattern as a basis for the garment - but would alter it all over the place... I ended up finding it easier to just sew a quick prototype up first, and use a sharpie to mark on the prototype exactly where I needed to make my alterations.

So, when I'm creating patterns now for anything outside of quilting, I create a prototype first.

I managed to pick up a super cheap bolt of muslin cotton and I LOVE it. It's close enough to quilter's cotton in weight that it acts like it should, so I can play around with my patterns with some accuracy.

When I was in the middle of developing a pattern for a sewing machine cover for Sew Mama Sew, I used my muslin as a mock-up to test the pattern I'd made:
