my first: pixelated

9:47:00 PM

The lovely Ali of a2w posed a challenge for the beginning of this year, ending March 8.

The challenge was to create something quilty using the Pantone color of 2013: Emerald.

More on the rules can be found here.

We were allowed to use all shades of green, although emerald should be the primary focus, with one other color and a neutral in allowance (the colors I used are listed at the bottom of this post).

I decided to pay an homage to my very first machine:
...a hand-me-down Brother from the 70's.

I wanted to make a funky wall-hanging/mini-quilt, and I thought, hey, why not 'pixelate' the Brother?

I started out with a load of 1" squares in 13 colors (12 shades of green, including Kona Emerald):
I then got to work setting out my 'pixels' and sewing them all together in sections:

...and then attached those larger sections together:
...got to work basting the layers,
...and then started quilting it, trimming threads as I went...
 Quilting, quilting, quilting...
And, all done, bound in my one 'other' color, Kona Hibiscus, also integrated in the machine in 5 pixels, finished size (27.5" x 22"):

Colors used:
Background
Kona Bone

Machine:
(all green Konas)

emerald
everglade
glacier
pond
aloe
ice frappe
sage
jade
candy green
holly
willow
kelly
hibiscus

Binding:
Kona Hibiscus

It was a fun project to undertake; I just would like to thank Ali for hosting the challenge, and to all of the generous sponsors!
