7:01:00 AMWelcome to the next stop in the Fat Quarter Shop's Top 10 Videos blog hop!
The Fat Quarter Shop is celebrating their top 10 You-Tube video tutorials of 2015 with a blog hop. Myself and some other super talented quilty bloggers are each featuring their take on the Fat Quarter Shop's "Fractal Quilt" pattern today! Make sure to visit the Jolly Jabber today and the hopping bloggers, too:
This free pattern, available through the Fat Quarter Shop, features the Creative Grids Kites Plus Ruler -
which was really fun to work with.
Don't let the y-seams scare you - Kimberly's video is super thorough, easy to follow, and is packed with great tips!
Make sure to check out the video before you start sewing. The tips and tricks that Kimberly gives are priceless.
Like I said above, I had a ton of fun working on this quilt. My mom was here when I first agreed to be a part of the hop; and it just so happened that I had just received a package of some Riley Blake polka dots (my mom's absolute favorite pattern - she loves those dots!) so she asked if I wouldn't mind making this quilt for her. Something to snuggle up under at night on the couch.
Please excuse the not so great pictures - it was well below freezing here in Chicago when I took them, and I was in a bit of a rush to get back inside, hahaha!

I simplified the quilt a bit, adding negative space and added some extra kites here and there to give it a floating effect -
I quilted it with a variegated Aurifil 50wt in grey, and used a nice fluffy wool batting (my first time using wool, and I loved it!) I used Kona Iron as a background, and Kona Caribbean to bind it (excuse my crummy free motion quilting, I'm working on it) -
On the back, I had a bit of fun with a bunch of leftover kites. I grouped them in 3's and then surrounded them in a Madrona Road print -
The quilt finishes in at about 50x70.
It's on its way home to Canada now, where I'm sure it'll be well loved.
Thanks to the Fat Quarter Shop for asking me to participate in this awesome hop, and, more importantly, for producing such awesome video tutorials!

It's a beautiful quilt Erin. I like all the negative space.
ReplyDeleteYour quilting looks wonderful to me, Erin.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Jen :)
DeleteWhat a lovely quilt your mum was certainly in the right place at the right time :)
ReplyDeleteGreat finish! I'd love to make one, but can't find the ruler, and with shipping and the exchange rate, it's too costly to order from the USA.
ReplyDeleteYour FMQ isn't crummy at all... it's just a Work In Progress, like we all area! I like the negative space created by the Kona Iron and the colour pops of your piecing.
ReplyDeleteLucky Mom! Your fmq looks fine...I've always said you have to work with where you are in and use what you can do, then eventually your skills will improve!
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful and so fluffy to snuggle under, your mother will love it.
ReplyDeleteI ♥ to hear from you!
